A View from the Tower
BMX Street Prelims
By Mike Vincent
At today’s stop of the LG Action Sports World Tour, we found ourselves in Paris, France. Paris is well known for tourism, and our competition was located near the most well-known tourist attraction within the city…The Eiffel Tower.
With twenty international riders in the BMX street prelims, the spectators at the Trocardero witnessed a great competition. Even the tourists up in the Eiffel Tower could see the action on the street course.
Just in case you weren’t watching from the Eiffel Tower, here’s what happened…
10th place-- Benny Korthaus-- Benny came from Germany to find the last spot in the finals by doing tail whip tailtaps, huge back flips, and 540s.
9th place-- Markus Wilke-- Another German rider, Markus had some creative lines on the park course. Markus did some smooth grinds, stylish turndowns, and a crazy transfer to 360 tailtap to fakie.
8th place-- Koji Kraft— From Chicago, Koji is no stranger on this tour. He also rides Vert, so that means he goes big. Huge airs, tailwhip tailtaps, tailwhips, and a huge turndown backflip.
7th place-- Axel Juergens— Axel came all the way from Argentina to make today’s competition. Huge backflips, 360s, tailwhips, peg stalling the sub-rail, and a 360 tailwhip.
6th place-- Corey Martinez— You might not see Corey at many LG events, but if you follow BMX at all, you should know his name. This kid has style for miles. Smooth grinds, tailwhips, 360s, ice pick the sub-rail, and a truck driver drop-in off the ledge.
5th place-- Chris Mahoney— Chris had some minor difficulties during his first run, but made up for his mistakes in his second run. Big tailwhips, tailwhip transfers, 360 lookbacks, tailwhip to tailtap, stretched supermans, and a huge flair.
4th place-- Tom Haugen— Tom is another US rider who makes it out to most of the LG Action Sports World Tour events. Tom has the big tricks, but also some technical skills. Tailwhip tailtaps, suicide 360s, double tailwhips, and some super technical lip tricks.
3rd place-- Ben Hennon— Ben started out with a bang, firing off some huge tricks within the first few seconds of his run. 360s, barspins, flipwhips, 270 truck driver, tailwhip tailtaps, and barspin to manuals.
2nd place-- Alessandro Barbero— Alessandro made the trip from Italy to impress the spectators. He’s a little guy, but I’m sure you could see him from the Eiffel Tower. He’s got the big tricks. Stylish inverts, truck driver to no-footer, barspins, 360 tailwhips, and double tailwhips.
1st place-- Dave Dillewaard-- Dave is Australian, but spends most of his time in the US. He also seems to do really well in every LG event that he enters. Fresh off a win last week in Berlin, today he showed everyone that his first place finish was well deserved. He did a jam-packed run with huge stylish tricks. Way to go Dave.
That wraps up today’s BMX Park Prelims, but unfortunately tomorrow’s weather forecast is calling for rain. We’ll hope for clear skies, but we can’t promise anything. See you tomorrow.
