Trapt
Keith Allen Caught up With the Band Before the Show
“Headstrong, I’ll take you on, Headstrong, to take on anyone!” WOW, Trapt was amazing!
There is a saying in the world of entertainment: “It’s an overnight success…only after years of developing the skill to express your recognized talent.” This goes for anything, or anyone who realizes their accomplishments with that of their fans. This fittingly describes the guys from Trapt.
Formed in 1995 as a group of high school friends from Los Gatos California, they dug the trenches of their destiny with a firm grip on the determination and angst that ultimately became the fabric of who they are today.
I had the chance to sit with Trapt in San Diego just before they played the last stop of the Action Sports World Tour.
Made up of Chris Brown (vocals and guitar), Simon Ormandy (lead guitar), Peter Charell (bass), and Aaron “Monty” Montgomery (drums), Trapt was a surprisingly great group of guys to talk with, and see live.
I say “surprisingly”, because I really wasn’t expecting much to be honest. I figured okay, here’s a band that had a hit with “Headstrong,” and has a “guilty pleasure” melody-heavy sound that could be compared to a variety of bands. WRONG! They have something that goes way beyond that unfortunate surface. The top layer that comes with such huge success with a single like “Headstrong” can easily become transparent after seeing their live show.
The music was tight, the vocals were powerful, in tune, and everything came together with a seamless stitch of intensity I insist upon before I recommend someone. I strongly recommend you check out their sophomore release “Someone in Control” (produced by Don Gilmore, who also produced Linkin Park, Pearl Jam, and Good Charlotte to name a few).
Trapt has had the ability to maintain the elementary basics that brought them together in the first place, a love for playing music, a unified message in their style, and the gift of experience to pull it off live.
Check out their website, keep an eye out for their new album to drop sometime in the next year, and take a second to see what these guys are all about. If you’re like me, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what lies beneath the surface.
