Vive Brasil: Rodolfo Ramos Represents
Inside the Skateboard Street Contest in Dallas
2006 LG Action Sports Skate Park Champion Rodolfo Ramos will be at it again in Dallas, flying the flag for Brazilian skateboarding and looking to repeat his big-money win from last year. He won't be alone: It's become common in skateboarding to speak of the Brazilian Invasion, and in some recent Skate Park contests the South American contingent has taken on majority status among the competition field.
When Ramos drops in to defend his title at the 2007 LG Action Sports Championship, he may very well end up congratulating each of the other riders on the podium in Portuguese: Other confirmed riders include Rodolfo's brother Wagner Ramos and their fellow countrymen Rodil de Araujo, Jr., Fabrizio Santos, Tulio de Oliviera, Danilo do Rosario, and Fabio Sleiman.
Following the treasure maps left by the likes of pro skaters Bob Burnquist and Sandro Dias, the new crop of Brazilian skaters have made an impression in international skateboarding by building a collective reputation for powerful riding, smooth style, creative consistency, and a huge diversity of highly technical tricks. The LG Action Sports Championship prizes represent one of the biggest cash purses in skateboard history, the kind of prize money that goes a long, long way back home in Brazil. The way each of these guys have been skating in competition this year, a Brazilian podium sweep is a very real possibility.
The Brazilians won't be the only ones representing the world stage, either: Watch for big moves from the likes of Mohd Firdaus Bin Abdul Rahman (the skater from Singapore who won X Games Asia this year), Milton Martinez (the skater from Argentina who won the "O Marisquiño" contest in Spain this year and took 2nd at Latin X Games), and Jürgen Horrwath (the versatile German vert/bowl/street/park skater who won the miniramp/bowl title at the European Skateboard Association Championships).
Other top skaters standing in the Brazilians' way include last year's 2nd place finisher Kyle Berard, skate superstar Greg Lutzka, and core skaters like Dayne Brummet and Chad Fernandez. Should be one hell of a contest.
The LG Action Sports Championships will take place in Dallas November 9-11, 2007. To catch the action live, pick up tickets online, or tune in to the LG Action Sports Championships on CBS, Spike TV, and Versus.
