The LG Action Sports Championships Returns to Dallas
Dallas Action Sports Scene
by Brooke Geery
The countdown begins as the LG Action Sports Championships returns to Dallas for the second time. After the success of the '06 event, it was only fitting that the third largest city in the Lonestar State would again host the best skateboard, BMX and inline athletes as they vie for a $600,000 purse.
Even when the best of the best aren't in town, Dallas hosts its own bustling action sports scene. Only a few towns can boast a shop run by a pro, and one of them is Dallas. Professional skateboarder Mike Crum runs Crum and Smith skateshop in the suburb of Allen, also home to The Edge skatepark, a free, concrete park. And Crum isn't the only pro who calls Dallas home. Vert legend Jon Comer can be found managing the Dallas Woodward Skatepark on any given day.
The city has recently begun adopting the idea of building more free skateparks. The first opened in Lakeland Hills in the summer of 2007. It's part of a plan that includes even more parks, including a destination park in the City Center in 2009. Dallas residents have also been petitioning to get their own street plaza built in the DFW area.
It's not just skateboarding though. There is also a strong BMX scene, dating back to the days when flatland ruled (Dallas even hosted an X trials when flatland was a X Games event.) Racing is a huge, Dallas is home to Metroplex BMX a non-profit organization established in 1995 and fully sanctioned by the American Bicycle Association. And of course, nearby Austin hosts a huge freestyle BMX scene one of the largest and most respected in the world.
In general Texans love their sports. With three professional teams, the Dallas Cowboys, the Dallas Mavericks and the Dallas Stars, the city is the place for big action, and the LG Action Sports Championships are guaranteed to satisfy. Last year more than 60,000 Dallas-area residents crowded into the Reunion Arena over the course of the weekend to witness the some of the best riding in the world. Don't miss out this year.
For 2007 musical artists like Kanye West and Ludacris will perform alongside some of the best Action Sports athletes in the world including Bucky Lasek, Jamie Bestwick, and Dave Mirra.
The LG Action Sports Championships will take place in Dallas November 9-11, 2007. To catch the action live, pick up tickets online, or tune in to the LG Action Sports Championships on CBS, Spike TV, and Versus.
