The Action Sports World Tour Takes on Belmont Park
Saturday Recap
By Jared Souney
Ahhh San Diego. They love their beach, and they love their action sports. The beach going action sports fans were out in droves today for BMX vert finals, skateboard vert finals, and inline vert finals. They also took in some FMX demos and a musical set from MXPX. Throw in sunburn and some sand in their shoes, and they’ve had a heck of a day out here at the Action Sports World Tour.
Outdoor contests can be a crap shoot, with wind and rain being the worst enemy. If you’re going to bring things outdoors, the weather in San Diego is absolutely perfect. Wind has ruined it’s share of outdoor vert contests this year, but it wasn’t a factor at all in San Diego.
Simon Tabron and Pierre-Luc Gagnon both managed to repeat their winning performances on the vert ramp from the tours previous stop in Phoenix, and Takeshi Yasutoko took home the inline vert win (inline was missing from the Phoenix line up). One important factor at this point on the tour, is that we’re leading into the LG Action Sports World Championships in Dallas, TX November 9-11. This means that qualifying spots were up for grabs, two from each discipline. From skateboard vert Jean Postec and Elliot Sloan got the spots. The BMX vert spots went to Austin Coleman and Mike Mancuso, and the inline vert spots went to Thumper Nagasako and Borja Fernandez. Welcome to Dallas boys. You’re in the championships… the big money round.
Tomorrow brings in something new for the Action Sports World tour: the SuperGirl Jam. An all-girls action sports extravaganza featuring a skateboard park contest, vert demo, snowboard rail jam, and a musical performance from the Donnas. There’s even a fashion show taking place. Make sure to come out and support the ladies of action sports right here on Mission Beach in Belmont Park.
