Lauren Perkins

Huntington Beach Born and Raised

By Brooke Geery

In the Skateboard Street final of the 2008 S3 Supergirl Jam, Lauren Perkins started off strong, posting the highest intro run score. She nailed a frontboard, backboard, 50-50 and several big kickflips to earn a 79. But the intro run only counted for 25% of the score, so Lauren still had to put on a good show to stay on top. Over the course of the five-minute jam session, she was nearly flawless. After sticking every trick she'd tried all weekend, Lauren took home a cool $5000.

Home, for Lauren is not so far away. In fact she's a true Huntington Beach local, born, raised and still residing here. We caught up with her to find out how it feels to win on your home sand, at the SG Supergirl Jam.

How old are you, where are you from and how long have you been skating?
I am 19 years old, I'm from Huntington Beach, CA, currently living here as well. I've been skating since I was seven.

How did it feel to win in front of your hometown crowd?
Oh my gosh, it was amazing. It was so cool, my family and friends were all here cheering me on, so it was definitely nice to win at home.

How did you get into skateboarding initially?
My grandmother always had a board laying around the house that was my dad's and I just was curios about it. And then they built a skatepark right around here and I was just into it. Never left the board since.

What did you think of the contest today?
I thought it was really good. All the girls were killing it. Women's skating is progressing so much.

Definitely. What do you think about the level of women's skating these days?
The level of women's skating is insane. These girls are starting to do the tricks the guys are doing and it's definitely pushing us all to try harder tricks.

How has your summer been going?
Summer has been good. Fun, hot, traveling. Really good though.

Who were you most impressed by this weekend?
Evelien (Boulliard) killed it. Same with Leticia (Bufoni.) All the girls though, they're amazing.

Did you get to watch any of the other events?
No, I was bummed. I really wanted to watch the snowboarding, but it was going on at the same time as our practice was so I wasn't able to.

Was this your first Super Girl Jam or did you come last year as well?
I came last year and did really bad and got 7th, so it felt really good to win this year!

Anyone you'd like to thank?
My friends and family and sponsors for coming out.
