Hometown Girl Lauren Perkins Qualifies First

By Brooke Geery

The face of women's skateboarding has changed dramatically in past few years. Not so long ago you'd be hardpressed to even put together a women's division. Spare the token girl, women rarely possessed the skills and drive to earn their own competition. But at the S3 Supergirl Jam in Huntington Beach, there were so many worthy girls that not only do they get their own event, but athletes needed to be pared down in a qualifier.

On Saturday 13 women vied for seven available spots in the skate street finals. The top finishers would join the top fiver riders from last year, including Vanessa Torres and Amy Caron, prequalified for the final.

The field represented girls from literally across the globe-skaters came from Canada, Beguim and Brazil, in addition to all over the US. The styles were as varied as the girls themselves, but one thing's for sure, every one of the ladies had serious street skating chops.

The girls attacked the wooden street course, built right on top of the sand on Huntington Beach. Each was given a one-minute intro run, and then a 5-minute jam session in small groups to show the judges their best tricks.

Highlights included Tamara Drybrough's front and backside boardslides, Evelien Bouiliart's backside lipslides and Eliana Sosco's kickflips on everything. Hometown girl Lauren Perkins took top honors with tricks such as frontside boardslides, feeble grinds and her signature perfect kickflips.

The ladies take the street course again on Sunday at Noon to determine the 2008 S3 Supergirl Jam Street Champion.
