Skateboard Vert Best Trick

Brazilian Karen Jonz Takes the Win

By Brooke Geery

After yesterday's Soul Bowl competition, it was obvious the girls in the S3 Super Girl Jam were not afraid of a little, (ahem) big, transition. Today's best trick contest again showcased the fearless women who love to soar high above the crowd. The best trick format rewards a single trick, as opposed to the overall use of the ramp as in a regular competition. Since it's a jam session, the girls got as many tries as they could squeeze into thirty minutes to land their best move.

There were some heavy hitters in attendance such as Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins, Mimi Knoop and Cara Beth Burnside. Everyone was skating well. 12-year olds Leah Taylor and Allysha Bergado kept up with the big girls, collectively taking more runs than anyone. Amelia Brodka was trying very impressive-looking airwalk to fakies. Gaby Ponce soared the highest of all and came absurdly close to landing a kickflip indie.

Cara Beth Burnside was opting for technical lip tricks over air, and finally nailed a backside disaster and a feeble fakie to take 4th place. As for the top three, Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins took third with a Gay Twist, and even attemped a few Mctwists, the only girl to go fully upside down all day. Mimi Knoop couldn't quite stick her heelflip indie, but she did pull a frontside invert for second. The first place prize went to Karen Jonz from Brazil. Definitely a new name on the scene, she nailed a nollie pop-shuv it early on in the competition, which no one was able to top.

The Vert action is not over yet though. The girls will put on another demo Sunday afternoon for the huge crowd that has gathered in Huntington Beach.
