BMX Triples Qualifying Night Two
The second night of Qualifying just wrapped in Costa Mesa, and it was every bit as packed with heavy-hitters as the first. TJ Ellis, Cory Nastazio, John Jennings, Austin Coleman, Mike "Hucker" Clark and more. Double flips, double downside whip 360s... there were plenty of bangers being thrown out all night long.
Tonight saw the second group of 18 riders attempting to qualify for Friday's final (last night was the first group). Each group competed in a head to head bracketed format, and the top six riders from each night move on to Friday final. The true cream of the crop moves on.
The Triples event is judged on two back to back jump sets, followed by a quarterpipe. Each hit counts, and in a head to head format, you've got to throw down your best stuff just to advance. So the big tricks were coming out very early on.
After three rounds of solid riding, the three riders were left to battle: TJ Ellis (last year's Costa Mesa champ), Austin Coleman, and Andy Buckworth. Coleman had bobbles in each of his finals runs. Buckworth put together a banger of a run that included an amazing double downside whip 360. But not even that could top TJ's second run which ended in a triple whip on the quarter. Serious business.
