Cincinnati Prelims: Skate and BMX Vert
ASA Action Sports World Tour
By Jared Souney
For the third stop of the ASA Action Sports World Tour we're at Kings Island outside Cincinnati, OH. Day One was a Prelim round day for Skateboard Vert and BMX Vert, and included freestyle motocross demos as well.
Some of the biggest names in the BMX and Skate vert world turned out to shred the 14 and a half foot tall ASA Action Sports World Tour halfpipe in front of a huge Kings Island crowd. For BMX, Chad Kagy, Simon Tabron, Steven McCann, Jimmy Walker and more were killing it. Kevin Robinson was also in the house, but an injury kept him off the ramp. Skaters included Jean Postec, Danny Mayer, Adam Taylor, and the man who seemingly can't be stopped, Pierre-Luc Gagnon.
In BMX Vert, the story was pretty straight forward. Simon Tabron, Jimmy Walker and Steve McCann flowed their way into the top three spots. Tom Stober, who has been battling back issues for the last few years, put down a great run including a one-footed X-up flair. Before he knew it, Tom had made his first vert final of the year. Tom's Woodward riding buddy Jorge Jovel also squeaked into the final.
Skateboard Vert was a mix of old Pros and young rookies. One of the highlights included Zach Miller, a first year pro, making his first Pro Vert final. Zach's first Pro contest was the Minneapolis stop of the tour a few weeks back, and nerves ended all of his prelim runs early. But this event was a different story, and he put down an amazing run first shot (the skaters get three runs). Other young skaters moving to the final included Josh Stafford, Rob Lorifice, Adam Taylor and Marcelo Bastos. They'll join veterans like Danny Mayer, Neal Hendrix, and Pierre-Luc Gagnon, who keeps winning contest after contest.
For today's final, expect Chad Kagy to come out swinging in BMX Vert. He's sitting right in the middle of the pack after prelims. In Skate Vert Danny Mayer is going to be looking to take down PLG. At the last two stops they've battled back and forth, and extremely close second place finishes have Danny looking for the win. After a perfect kickflip McTwist in his prelim run yesterday, it just might be Danny's day.
